There are 2 directors that had to be in this list. The first one is, no doubt, Mamoru Oshii. After Hayao Misyazaki, Oshii is the most well known Japanese animation movie director, most known, not only by the series Ghost in The Shell, but also by the Patlabor movie trilogy. It's semi-realistic character design, combined with an unique style of animation makes his works true masterpieces, at the sme level at Miyazaki. The second director is Shinji Aramaki. I think Aramaki should be in this list, not beacuse of what he has done (decades ago) but what he has been doing in recent years, and how it can affect the future of Japanese Animation. For those who don't know, Shinji Aramaki is the guy who proved that Anime didn't have to be restricted to 2D animation and was able to do the most successfull 3D/CGI Anime movies/series ever done. From 2004's Appleseed, to 2019's Ultraman series, to the new CGI Starship Troopers films (as director) almost every Japanese 3D animation film has (at least) his participation. That's why Aramaki had to be in that list. While Miyazaki and Oshii represent the past, Aramaki represents the future of Japanese Animation, by breaking a barrier betwen conventional (or CGI Assisted) 2D animation an actual 3D Animation, in Japan.

A wonderful tale taking place during the holidays about an unlikely 'family'
Gin, a middle-aged man who claims to have lost everything; Miyuki, a teenage runaway with a somewhat touchy temper; Hana, a middle-aged transsexual.
When the homeless family discover an abandoned child in the garbage, they venture on to find the child's family. Throughout the movie, they face a variety of obstacles, including incidences of faith and crime, and inevitably their own pasts. The action is dramatic, the resolutions are touching, and the characters, though differing in personalities, are all fun at one point or another (particularly the outgoing Hana.
Though some incidences are incredible, the characters are somewhat realistic, and the story itself proves that not all animation is for 'kids. One thing that should be clarified, however, is that while Hana is a transsexual, homosexuality is scarce in the movie.

The characters are stunningly well crafted and real and the story is fascinating and fun. Funny, sad, wise, madcap, by turns this movie makes you smile and get weepy, it thrills, worries and surprises you. Seriously! I totally love the story and the ending is brilliant. Give this movie a try, you will totally not regret it! Synopsis: Three homeless people in Tokyo - Hana (a wonderful transvestite)Gin (a protective soul) and 16 year old Miyuki find a baby in the trash on Christmas Eve. Gin and Miyuki are prosaic and want to take her to the police but sentimnental Hana (abandoned himself as a child) wants to find her family. Along the way little Kiyoko seems surrounded by coincidences and almost miracles as her new friends find her home.

All of these directors are my favorites, I'm glad you mentioned them, especially for their hidden gem works compared to their most successful ones. Hana is a homosexual man. The movie makes that fairly clear.
