My spy trailer. My spy movie 2019. JJ (Dave Bautista) is an undercover CIA agent who is not exactly inconspicuous. After a weapons deal goes horribly wrong he is assigned to surveillance duty with tech-specialist Bobbi (Kristen Schaal. Their job is to keep an eye on a mother and daughter who may be in danger if a global terrorist finds out where they live. But JJ isn't exactly qualified for surveillance duty and it's not long before he is caught out by clever 9 year old Sophie (Chloe Coleman) the girl he is supposed to be watching. The two work out an arrangement where Sophie won't tell her mum Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley) that they are being watched, but only if JJ teaches Sophie how to become a spy. The two don't exactly get along but over time a friendship develops, much to the chagrin of Bobbi who knows that this is a serious breach of the CIA surveillance rules. But, as expected, trouble inevitably finds its way into Sophie and Kate's life and we are left to see whether the spy training that JJ gave this precocious 9 year old will succeed or fail spectacularly.

This is clearly a debut movie in order to prove that Sasha Luss got what it takes to be the next action it-girl for an entire decade and I'm here for it. I like how he briefly introduced her in VALERIAN. You can tell he believes in her potential, no need to engage senseless rumors. Genuine professional relashionships exist too. I'd do the same if I was a notorious film director.

For a film like this, with a storyline that has been done to death plenty of times before, I was actually surprised at how much I liked My Spy. But my enjoyment didn't come so much from former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Stuber) but the confidence and acting ability of kid actor Chloe Coleman (Big Little Lies. In a lot of these 'kids teaching adults to be kids' films the child usually comes across as bratty and unlikeable but Coleman finds a great balance of clever, likeable and entertaining which Mr. 9 and I really found appealing. Also when you have a great comedy support cast like Kristen Schaal (Gravity Falls, Toy Story 4) and Ken Jeong (The Hangover movies) the laughter also lifts a notch too.

So as the school holidays comes to an end in Australia we finish off with yet another release of a children's film. The funny part is that it's a bit like a recipe, as it contains parts of all the other films I've reviewed already these summer holidays! You take the machismo of Playing with Fire, add the silliness of Farmageddon, plus a touch of heart from Frozen 2, not forgetting some funny one-liners from Jumanji, finish it off with some espionage from Spies in Disguise, garnish it with the child-friendly action of Star Wars and you have a perfectly satisfying film called My Spy. Mr. 9 and I ate it up (and reviewed it) last week when we saw it at Palace Nova cinemas.

But then again, if it’s a sense of nightmarish, escalating disorientation you are after, you could instead be watching the surreal “ Mulholland Drive, ” with proven proficiency in tapping into Watts’ appealing dark side. There are times Griffin nears that raw madness (with a little “ The Shining ” mixed in for good measure), once again, entirely thanks to Watts’ dedication. But on the whole, his indecisive “The Wolf Hour” tick-tocks its way to an underwhelming finale. And when it gets there, the most shocking realization you’ll have is how forgettable an affair it all has been. Advertisement It’s a shame, because Griffin sets his neo-noir-adjacent psychological thriller in one of the most cinematically juicy eras and locales in American history. We are in the summer of 1977, cramped inside a grubby apartment in a South Bronx walkup that has seen better days. Outside, the. 44 caliber killer, Son of Sam, is looming large, the heat is sweltering and somewhere in the city, Travis Bickle is still driving his taxi while the infamous blackout of July ’77 bides its time. But we don’t see any of that however, and settle instead for a diminutive microcosm of the period within the confines of writer June Leigh’s (Watts) apartment, a roomy-ish (by New York standards) living quarter with a view, which used to belong to the author’s grandmother. Mercifully, Kaet McAnneny ’s production design does a fine enough job injecting this mostly indoors-set picture with a real sense of time and place. Amid all the piles of books, dusty nooks and crannies and a mucky kitchen, June watches this “Drop Dead”-era world go by behind her dirt-encrusted windows. Police sirens are constantly within her earshot and the Twin Towers are still erect in her eyesight. If only this once-celebrated counterculture figure could just step outside. But she had decided to lock herself in and put a stop to the troubles she’s caused after one of her successful books destroyed her family. If she never leaves, June figures, she can’t do any further harm. But what if someone is trying to hurt her instead? There are certainly enough clues, the chief of them being an unknown someone incessantly buzzing her intercom to never answer back. We never really know how long June has been living like this, though the mountainous trash bags scattered in her apartment (which you can almost smell) and Watts’ sweaty breathlessness offer clues that it’s been a while, to say the least. Every now and then, other people walk in and out of the story to release us from mind-numbing monotony, like a concerned but supportive sister (played amicably by Jennifer Ehle), an opportunistic delivery guy/hustler (the always memorable rising star Kelvin Harrison Jr. ), a creepy cop and a self-professed midnight cowboy ( Emory Cohen of “ Brooklyn ”), who helps amplify the tension when boredom starts to take over. The finest (and predictably, the most distressing) segment of “The Wolf Hour” arrives when lights get wiped out across the city. Griffin plays the well-known, violent and chaotic beats of the historical occurrence with impressive believability, aided by Khalid Mohtaseb ’s cinematography that accentuates shadows and light flickers with gritty texture. Yet Griffin’s film never really gets anywhere revelatory. Worse, it doesn’t seem to want to. Like the sheltered loner at its center, “The Wolf Hour” feels jailed amongst a string of half-realized ideas, too intimidated to step outside and tackle them head-on. I can’t believe I watched this at Sundance. Horrible. I guess if you like watching Naomi Watts smoke cigarettes for two hours while doing absolutely nothing, then this is the movie for you. There’s a reason why she’s among my top 10 favorite actresses of all-time. She can not be at her best & still handle it like nobody business. I think it takes a certain kind of person with certain kind of life experiences to fully appreciate a movie such as this. Essentially the entire film is Naomi Watts holing herself up in her apartment, smoking cigarettes and slowly losing what little bit of sanity she has left. I actually really dug it. I could almost see myself in the character. I hate when people knock on my door, I’ve watched that many true-crime documentaries that when I hear my neighbours knocking on my door I legit mute my tv and ignore them, pretending I’m not there in the hopes that they’ll go away, because god forbid if I actually answered it I would pay dearly for it with… THE WOLF HOUR is a polarizing allegory on isolation & the internal/external dangers in our lives which fuels our own paranoia. Takes place in a single location with the great Naomi Watts in every scene. Like watching a short story play out on the screen but unfortunately that means the plot is extremely thin. Naomi Watts is clearly trying, but the film leaves her with nothing to do except: smoke to the point that you are not sure how she is still alive, have sex with a gigolo, talk to her grocery-deliver boy (who has some of the most perfunctory "inspirational" dialogue that I have heard in a long time), and lastly, really badly not wanting to go outside. I sat down to watch The Wolf Hour with some pretty heavy expectations and none of them were fulfilled, but then again, had I had no expectations, I would definitely have loved this movie more. It looks amazing and I love the fact that it basically takes place in one location. It also has great acting. Naomi Watts is solid, of course, but I really loved the performances of all the extras who were allowed to enter the apartment. A slow and painful death that no one deseves Yes. There are enough people who deserve that. June 23, 2019 4:16PM PT Naomi Watts delivers a nuanced, nervy turn as a reclusive shut-in stewing in paranoia, writer's block and the heat of the 1977 Bronx summer. Run a finger along any of the surfaces in Alistair Banks Griffin ’s sophomore feature “ The Wolf Hour, ” and it will come up slicked with sweat, grime and the residual soot of the city. It is the summer of 1977, and it’s hotter than hell. June Leigh ( Naomi Watts) perches on the window sill of the squalid Bronx apartment she dares not leave, facing right into a lethargic fan that scarcely even stirs the wavy brown hair off her sticky shoulders. Outside, little blisters of violence and intimidation erupt on the tinder-box streets, and somewhere nearby, Son of Sam is murdering women with wavy brown hair. “Hello from the gutters of New York City, ” the serial killer writes in letters to the papers, and though Griffin’s heavy-on-atmosphere, light-on-plot film takes place almost exclusively five floors up from ground level, those gutters feel palpably, oppressively close. “ The Wolf Hour ” is a peculiar film, compelling in its way due to Watts’ tensile, committed performance as a once-celebrated feminist writer now hemmed in to her dead grandmother’s apartment by paranoia and the demons unleashed by her earlier success. And though there are other players, if there is a second lead in this near-single-location, near-one-woman-show, it is probably Kaet McAnneny’s production design, which oozes menace and neglect so viscerally it might as well be ectoplasm. Khalid Mohtaseb’s supple photography, too, is a small wonder, never cheating the small space, but finding enough maneuverability within it so that a sense of claustrophobia is evoked without the imagery ever feeling constrained. But for all these strengths, and the judicious application of Saunder Jurriaans and Danny Bensi’s nervy score, the film lacks texture where it needs it most — in June’s unraveling psychology. She has been holed up here for a while — long enough to have bags of trash collecting flies beside the dusty draft of her second book in the living room, a system in place for paying the rent without opening her door and a regular grocery delivery set up with the bodega nearby. Her isolation is almost complete, except for a sinister buzzing intercom that crackles emptily when she answers it, and for a sudden, unwanted visit from her old friend Margot (Jennifer Ehle), who brings literal and figurative fresh air into her life for a moment, before June alienates her again. Aside from that, she forms a testy bond with delivery boy Freddie (Kelvin Harrison Jr. ) and fights off the rapey advances of a cop (Jeremy Bobb). But mostly, she chain-smokes, sweats into her drab tank top and fails to write. For all the hothouse menace Griffin summons, there is something coldly considered about “The Wolf Hour. ” As much as we feel June’s anxiety, and the acrid, stultifying weight of the humid air that encases her like wet cement, we never feel for her. Case in point: she replays a videotape of a much more put-together June being condescended to by a male interviewer and matching him jab for jab, until he unleashes the revelation that undoes her entirely and leads to her current, straggly-haired, sweat-stained incarnation. On the one hand, it’s a fairly effective way of cluing us in on backstory while maintaining the rigor of the single-location premise. But her past vicissitudes seem so like they happened to another person (one we never properly meet) that it’s difficult to invest in them. (It doesn’t help that the bombshell TV interview irresistibly recalls the “Simpsons” episode where Bart taunts Lisa with the video where “you can actually pinpoint the second when [Ralph’s] heart rips in half”). This cautiousness also extends to the film’s themes. Whereas there is a racial and a class element to June’s paranoia, as an unstable, vulnerable white woman from a wealthy background living alone and friendless in a predominantly black, poor, socially volatile neighborhood, the film shies away from a real exploration of that provocative situation. And even her creative struggle is undermined: “The Wolf Hour” takes the notion of literary blockage excessively seriously — as it does everything: The portrayal of the classic ’70s feminist as a being almost defined by her stringent humorlessness is something of a cliché by now. But it also implies that maybe all June really needed to get those juices flowing again was some halfway decent sex, which comes courtesy of an unusually sensitive gigolo, beautifully played by a soft-bodied, gentle-eyed Emory Cohen. “The Wolf Hour” touches on explosive ideas of racism, sexism, guilt, delusion and urban isolation, so it’s frustrating that, like the gun June obtains at one point, they are handled only warily and then shoved under the floorboards. The general consensus is that the other major 1977 heatwave-set New York City film, Spike Lee’s sprawling “Summer of Sam, ” bit off more than it could chew. But “The Wolf Hour” tries to make a five-course meal of the merest morsel, leaving Watts, on eminently watchable form, to grind her teeth on a role far less meaty than it ought to have been. Having watched both your name and weathering with you, I feel as though your name still stands out with its sophisticated and entertaining story-telling. However, weathering with you is no slouch either! The execution of the movie was breath-taking, with creative methods being implemented to portray the plot. The animation quality the movie boasts is a huge bonus too. Wouldn't mind watching it the second time. However, it has its flaws too. I feel as though the plot hinders the movie as the film logic is rather inconsistent and it has led me to believe that the story did not progress as smooth as much I would hope for. Adding the fact that the film lacks character development. Moreover, the ending raises unresolved questions too. Such as:

1. There was a glimpse moment in the end where Hina meets Hodaka, but Hina is seen praying while the horizon displays a feint light. As a viewer, I'm quite puzzled whether Hina's powers were stripped off or not?
2. The future of Tokyo has no closure towards the end
imo, I really wanted more for the ending, to see them two reunited and embracing more. But oh well. You won't regret watching this movie.

I will watch this instead of raiding area 51. Got to see this movie twice now, first subbed then the dub with some friends. For as much as critics are hailing this as more emotionally impactful than Your Name, I think that Shinkai adequately tempered the depressing story elements with stabs of playful humor or hopeful optimism (looking at you, Nagi. I think back to SPOILER After the 3 finally find a hotel that would put them up for the night, they all exhaustedly collapse to the floor in front of the door and start cracking up laughing. After they literally started a potentially dangerous car fire in a busy city square by SUMMONING LIGHTNING. That portrayal of emotionally charged adolescent recklessness was spot-on and an interesting change of pace for Shinkai's characters, Shinkai protagonists even! I will say though - the first time I saw this movie I knew absolutely nothing about it, no trailer no promo material nothing. That scene of Hodaka biting into a free burger that a stranger gave him out of pity after living in complete squalor for 3 days... I involuntarily started crying. No idea where that came from but I think it must have conjured a sort of stinging, vague memory of my own troubled childhood. 8/10 Garden of Words is still his best movie and POST.

The score compliments the original 'Webber' magic and stays true to the stage show. Judy Dench's portrayal of 'Old Deuteronomy' worked incredibly well considering the original was a male role whilst Jennifer Hudson's 'Grizabella' doesn't fail to give you goosebumps at the end of the film. Rebel Wilson ( Jennyanydots ) and James Corden ( Bustopher Jones ) seemed to play themselves very well and a nice little touch from Ray Winstone ( Growltiger ) gets typecast and the cap fits very well. A very well made sentiment to the original stage show that those who have seen the West End show will understand totally. If you have never seen or heard the score then the film might not sit well with the viewer. Anthropomorphism at its absolute finest. I loved it.

As a big Dinklage's fan, and considering that it was a world premiere, it was easy enough to go check it out. I'm glad I did. This movie is one about the brain and its struggles, but it does so with a big heart. It's funny and touching with a good balance, and the acting is top notch (I'm actually a bigger Dinklage's fan after the movie. The underlying themes about psychiatry as science and its potential negative effect on personality, the nature of identity, the complex interaction of desire and fear are inhabiting the film and are as relevant today as they were at the time. In summary, a great entertaining movie with a deeper layer. and a stellar Dinklage.

Nbd this is just the most excited Ive been for a movie ever. Who is the protagonist in Little Women. She's really so beautiful. Little women too. Christian and Winona were truly unique and beautiful couple. Both were extremely talented and with a fascinating biography (in some ways very similar. Everything was more natural in that era. I was very impressed by writer-director Greta Gerwig's first film, Lady Bird, so I was excited to see how she would take on the challenge of adapting a beloved, classic American novel while also making it seem thoroughly relevant and satisfying to contemporary audiences. Needless to say, she did an outstanding job at creating a truly memorable and well-made "Little Women."
To tell the story of the four March sisters (Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth, Gerwig uses a non-linear narrative that goes back and forth between when they were younger and their current life as young adults. While such a time device might seem distracting, she does an outstanding job at making it not only accessible but necessary. Each flashback is carefully placed and edited into the film for a reason; usually, to further develop its characters. By the time the film ends, we are left completely satisfied based on the unique character development of the main characters throughout their young lives. That's an extremely impressive feat already, but Gerwig doesn't stop there. The dialogue in her screenplay is fast, sharp, and slightly acerbic. The writing always helps develop characters both in personal and contextual manners, and the film's sense of humor nicely complements the story. As a result, viewers must pay careful attention- but the benefits are plentiful as the film concludes if they have.
I was also riveted by the performances in the movie. The four main actresses (Ronan, Watson, Pugh and newcomer Scanlen) are all excellent. Even though the film clearly presents a specific personality and mindset for each of its four main characters, the film clearly humanizes all of them as truly multi-dimensional people. Charming and affable, Timothee Chalamet's performance as Laurie is also memorable and often a lot of fun to see. Also noteworthy are Laura Dern as Marmee and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. Rounding out the unique and witty story and performances is the film's aesthetic value, with stunning and immersive cinematography and production design of 19th-century New England. Even seemingly simple lighting in enclosed spaces (e.g. houses) in the film, which may go unnoticed by some viewers, is crafted with clear appreciation and talent due to a variety of unique constraints caused by filming a story set in this time period- for example, the need to rely on candlelit interiors. A simple but powerful score also adds to the film's sense of atmosphere.
All in all, this was a superbly made and memorable adaptation, and I'm excited to see what Greta Gerwig does next. Very highly recommended. 10/10.
